Cambodia: Technical Identifier Code to be aware

Of course, it’s not new, it’s simple thing that we can find every where about this code but I come with a remind here, especially for technical people who put the code to identify Khmer language in their apps or websites.

Do not confuse with KH & km, KH is identify for country name like we can see now in Windows Vista or 7 the country code is KH but to identify the language, Khmer in your website, you should name it: km instead and the locale code is: km-KH (or km_KH).

Khmer Unicode Webfont Nokora not work on windows but phone

Nokora Google Webfont Error on Windows

I just have a look to some website which is using Nokora on latest Firefox(14.0.1) of Windows XP, I saw Nokora is not working fine, check it at Google Webfont.

Go to check the same website with Android mobile, it’s working fine.

Google Chrome is easy, fast and growing fast, now a top web browser

According to the global state counter via TheNextWeb, Google Chrome becomes a most used web browser in the world which is measured by the statistic data from 2011 to May of 2012 if comparing to Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), Firefox, Sofari, Opera and others.

Google Chrome has come on leaps and bounds since launching in 2008. Even myself start to use Chrome more often; I used Firefox for many years but its performance is becoming slower and slower. Currently I keep using both Firefox and Chrome to see when I can do all as Firefox (of course, it does ~ just my awareness), I will fully switch to Chrome if Firefox doesn’t give me a better performance.

In any how, the statistic is just one source of data, people in Cambodia might keep using Firefox or IE since we have recently and officially the Firefox in Khmer language translated by Aurora Group and a very good cooperation between ICT community in Cambodia and Mozilla which you can find information here; And IE is coming together with Microsoft Windows. But Google Chrome, we don’t have any officially link together yet, only some people made localization on their own and share among community and it is having some bugs with Khmer Unicode as well which I used to state in my post in July 2011.

However for me, a light weight browser, we can consider Google Chrome for today.

Android ICS Questions & Answers for Galaxy S2 To Know Before Upgrading

Beside a rich features of Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) that you can find on ICS spec., you might need to aware some QAs series that you will face after upgrading to ICS:

Q. Can I use Bluetooth 3.0 HS function in ICS version?

A. The Ice cream Sandwich OS feature does not support Bluetooth 3.0 HS (High Speed) function

However Bluetooth 3.0 is supported.
If you want to transfer a file at a faster data rate between devices, you can use Wi-Fi direct function. (where the other device supports this function)

Q. Can I see Adobe flash contents in web browser?

A. No – To view compatible Adobe Flash contents of a web page, please download Flash player from Android “Play Shop”” (Previously known as Android market).

Q. I use the exchange server account in my mobile and can not upgrade its OS to ICS through Kies.

A. Some exchange server account requires the “device encryption” to connect to
exchange server.

“Device encryption” limits the synchronization or firmware updating through Kies.

Please decrypt or initialize your mobile after data backup and try to upgrade again.

Q. Wall paper and Widgets after upgrading?

A. The Wall Paper set prior to ICS update will revert back to the “default” setting
The Widgets set prior to the ICS update will be initialized

Q. Application compatibility for ICS?

Some 3rd applications will not work in ICS OS

If so, please advise customer they will need to advise 3rd party application developer that an update to the app is required.

Any way, today, most of the application support ICS that it might not so worried

Q. Khmer Unicode on ICS?

A. As I already stated in my previous post, Khmer Unicode doesn’t work natively on ICS controls or application like facebook, Google Plus or twitter as GingerBread that we at least see the character but with ICS, you will see blank.

But with browser of ICS, you can browse any website that embedded Khmer Unicode correctly with font embedded or Google Webfont, we don’t need Khmum Browser to view that.

Any way, I haven’t experiment all of them, they are from other users’ comment and manual for Samsung Galaxy S2 with ICS.

Please share if you have faced other problems with Android ICS on other devices or Samsung Galaxy S2.

After upgrade ICS on Galaxy SII, No Khmer Unicode available

Just a quick info after upgrading Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on Galaxy S2 (Android version 4.0.3), Khmer Unicode font is not available even with boxes letter or question mark, it shows blank character with all Khmer Unicode words.

My Galaxy S2 info:

Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: I9100DXLP9
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100DXLP9-CL431438 dpi@DELL176 #3
Build number: IML74K.DXLP9

It doesn’t show any Khmer Unicode on:

Keyboard: Phum Keyboard
On browser, other application like facebook

You can ~~only use Khmum Browser~~ to browse Khmer Unicode sites for website without webfont but…

Updated 18/07:

Cambodia Android User Group (CAUG) confirmed that they can make Galaxy SII fully work with Khmer Unicode without rooting the system. But need to contact them to install. See detail in Khmer for the announcement.

Hope, they release free version to install soon.

Firefox 12 has Khmer localized, Thanks to Firefox Aurora Khmer GROUP

We haven’t spent any effort to help the team localized firefox to have Khmer but our thanks is to use it for our daily work to support our friends’ work, Firefox Aurora Khmer. And to promote more usage in Khmer Unicode!

Install Khmer font on Galaxy S2 without rooting the system

I got successfully installed Khmer Unicode on my Galaxy S2 (Android 2.3.6) without rooting system but Khmer character is not well rendering that needs a bit more patient to wait for Android upgrade.

Phone Spec. & Font Setting

Below solution is applied for Android version GingerBread (2.3.x) only
Android ICS (4.0.3) has problem with Khmer Unicode, see here

To apply for Android 2.3.x:

Here is what I did by following the instruction from KhmerType blog:

Enable “unknown sources” installation (via Setting->Application)
Install Khmer.apk
Change font style
1. Settings > Display > Screen display > Font style
2. Choose Khmer
Restart the phone
Testing: Go to this website page: http://khnews.info/testing.html
To write Khmer, download Khmer keyboard from Android Market: Phum Keyboard or MultiLing Keyboard
To enable input keyboard:
1. Settings > Languages and keyboard > Select input method
2. Choose: Phum Keyboard (in my case)

After you should be able to see everything in Khmer even though the rendering is not fine, you can type Khmer Unicode as well.

Updated 19/04: Android 4.1.2

Since there are so many comments asked about Android 4.1.x, this version, the rendering is working fine and perfect enough. It just miss the font so that you need to install above font and make the same instruction.

For Samsung Galaxy, it is more easier with its FlipFont as stated here for Galaxy Note 2.
